Bats are gentle and will not hurt anyone unless provoked and mistreated. People have the wrong insights about bats. Many of us think that bats are a bloodsucking monster, rodent, pest, etc. Where in fact, bats have a huge part in the ecosystem. Yes, bats can indeed contract rabies; they are mammal after. Bats are actually great pest controllers, they et unwanted pests in your garden like mosquitoes. Bats are also pollinators, just like birds. So why not invite these magnificent creatures into your yard? They won’t do any harm.

Plant herbs and flowers

The key to attract bats into your garden is to plant herbs and flowers. Why? A yard filled with flowers, ornaments, and veggies attracts insects. Insects will also attract bats because insects are part of their diet. All you have to do is wait till it’s dark and watch the bat as they feed on the insects in your garden. Night bloomers are also good at attracting nocturnal insects. Some night-blooming flowers include chocolate daisy, moonflower, queen of the night, Datura, red flair water lily, dragon fruit cactus, evening primrose, Casa Blanca, and tuber rose. The scent of the flowers attracts insects, which will lure the bat.

Install Bat boxes

The bat box is a human-made box that serves as a roosting place for bats. The bat box is a must if you want to attract bats in your garden. The first thing you need is to make a bat box made of wood, like plywood. You can always buy one supposing you have no knowledge or tool to make one. A bat box must have 3 chambers, passage holes, vents, and mounting brackets. There are many kinds of bat species; each species needs different spaces.

Provide a water source

If there is no natural water source near your house, you can make your own like a pond, fountain, etc. Bats also like to grip on grooved, rough surfaces.

The water source must be something bats will be able to climb out of since bats drink in swimming pools and could end up badly. Bats never land when drinking. Instead, they skim the surface of the water for quick, mid-flight gulps.

Keep your Garden a bit wild.

Keep your garden as natural as possible; avoid using fertilizer and poisonous chemicals in your garden. Use organic materials such as compost to help your garden bloom. A garden filled with plants will mimic the bats’ natural habitat; thus, more bats will visit your garden.

Benefits of a bat in your yard

Bats eat insects

Insects are part of their diet; bats are great at controlling the pest. Bats will eat any insect, including mosquitos. Bats reduces the number of unwanted insects that may carry deadly virus and decreases. One bat alone can eat over 700 mosquitos per hour.

Bats are pollinizer

Just like birds and insects, bats are pollinizers too. Bats in your yard can lead to a healthier garden with blooming flowers.

Bats produce organic fertilizer

Bats produce guano; their manure is a great source of organic fertilizer. Guano is very beneficial to your flowers, veggies, etc. Bat poop last a long time in the soil; thus, it’s very effective to use

Bats play an important role in the ecosystem. Sadly, many bats today continue to decline due to deforestation and other human-made activities in their habitat. Many bats are forced to leave their natural habitat. If nothing changes in the next years, bats will continue to decline. It’s not too late for us to help bats so that the next generation can continue to admire this majestic creature.
