Titanic
Titanic was released in 1997, a good year for movies. It was directed by James Cameron, who was hot off his success of the year’s hit film, The Abyss. It was about a wealthy couple, Jack and Rose, who are embarking on their dream cruise to New York City aboard the luxurious ocean liner, the Titanic. It was a massive hit and went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time, earning more than $2.2 billion worldwide. It spawned several spin-off films, tv shows, and even an epic musical, which is still being performed around the world.
Dirty Dancing
Dirty Dancing was one of those movies that were a total surprise hit. The premise of the movie was pretty simple: Frances “Baby” Houseman (played by Jennifer Grey) is a ballet dancer who works for a traveling dance troupe that arrives in a small town in Pennsylvania. Her best friend, Johnny (played by Patrick Swayze), is a fireman who moonlights as a professional dancer. Baby and Johnny fall in love with each other, but Baby’s mother (played by Rosie O’Donnell) disapproves of Johnny because he is from a different social class. As a result, Johnny takes a job as a waiter at the local country club to be near Baby.
Romeo and Juliet
The movie Romeo + Juliet was a game-changer in the romantic comedy genre. It was a fresh take on the genre and went on to become one of the best-loved films of all time. The story is based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name, and it starred young actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as lovers from warring families who vow to marry even though their families don’t want them to.
Carol
Carol is the story of a woman in a very conservative small town who has a secret affair with a young store clerk and then falls in love with him. The film stars Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a leading role. Carol was the first film directed by Todd Haynes, who has gone on to direct other films, including Far from Heaven, I’m Not There, and Velvet Goldmine.
Moonstruck
Moonstruck (1987) is a romantic comedy film starring Cher and Nicolas Cage. The film follows the love story between Cher and Johnny, a free spirit from New York City who falls in love with her possessive and controlling sister, Claire, who lives in New Jersey.
